Teen Maze
"Look Directly Into Your Future"
That’s exactly what hundreds of teens will do this May when they participate in the CBAE Teen Maze.
Local middle school students will literally walk into the future and experience the consequences of the choices they will be asked to make on their journeys into adulthood. They will move through a maze consisting of realistic venues through which they will all pass, based on the individual directions their lives have been charted. Life choices will be made for each participant through a random process. No one will know in advance what course his or her life will take. The approximately hour long experience will include realistic props and events such as graduation ceremonies, weddings and proms complete with formal attire, courtroom proceedings, medical facilities, and interactive dolls programmed to simulate real infants. Participating teens will feel the joy of success from making the best choices, the boredom of mediocrity from making choices of little or no thought, and the heartbreak of failure from making the wrong choices. A choice to do drugs might take you to the lifesize
prison after a daunting trip through the criminal justice process, or worse yet, to the county morgue following a fatal overdose. A choice to work hard, graduate from high school and go onto college might take you down the road of success, including career gratification, a happy family and prosperity. Other less prudent choices could lead you to divorce court, chronic unemployment, poor health and regret. Community volunteers are participating in this project as potential employers, mortgage lenders, college professors, marriage counselors, doctors, law enforcement officials and judges. The project is funded through CBAE and run by our CBAE program director, Heather Rhymes. For more information on the project contact Heather at 423-442-6770.
CBAE is a community based abstinence and education program. With grant funds provided by the Tennessee Department of Health, the Boys & Girls Club takes this program into local area schools and teaches young people the value of healthy life styles, how to avoid the temptations of sex and drugs, and how to effectively problem solve. It offers support to children and parents.
